Why Handpans Go Out of Tune

Common causes of pitch change

Some changes are temporary and environmental; others come from physical deformation. Treat a new reading as evidence to investigate, not as a diagnosis by itself.

Strong impact

Hard strikes, drops or pressure on the shell can deform a tone field and alter its resonances.

Heat and rapid temperature change

Direct sun, a hot car or a sudden move between climates can shift shell tension and pitch.

Transport vibration

Repeated shocks without a protective case can stress the instrument over time.

Metal stress

Material tension can settle gradually, especially after heavy use or previous repair.

Temporary movement versus a persistent issue

Let the instrument return to a stable room temperature, then compare several gentle strikes in the same conditions. If the reading returns to its usual range, the earlier movement may have been environmental.

A repeatable pitch shift, new beating, reduced sustain or a tone field that sounds unstable after conditions normalize is a stronger reason to request a professional assessment.

Protect the instrument

Use a protective case for transport, avoid leaving the handpan in direct sun or a vehicle, and do not place heavy objects on the shell. Play with controlled technique rather than force.

If a problem persists, contact an experienced handpan tuner. Do not attempt hammering or pressure-based corrections without proper training, because one change can affect several connected resonances.
