432Hz vs 440Hz

432Hz and 440Hz are alternative reference frequencies for A4. Changing that reference shifts every note in the tuning system; it does not only change the A4 label.

What the numbers mean

In a 440Hz system, the note A4 is assigned a frequency of 440 cycles per second. In a 432Hz system, A4 is assigned 432 cycles per second. Other equal-tempered targets are calculated at the same musical intervals from that reference.

The difference is about 31.8 cents, so a handpan tuned around 432Hz will read noticeably flat when a tuner is set to 440Hz. Always confirm the intended reference before judging a note.

A lower alternative reference used by some instruments and ensembles. All target notes move with it.

Choose for musical compatibility

Use the reference that matches the instrument and the musicians you plan to play with. If the handpan was built for 440Hz, switching a tuner to 432Hz does not retune the steel; it only changes the comparison targets shown on screen.

Solo players may choose according to their instrument and preference. Ensemble players should agree on a reference so the instruments relate predictably.

Avoid unsupported health claims

A pitch reference is a musical tuning choice. Claims that 432Hz alone treats illness, changes cells or guarantees a special healing effect are not established by the reference frequency itself.
